taking time off for this is an economic impossibility. No, I disagree. Otherwise there would have been no need for the Family Leave Act, right? Furthermore, anyone who has a 5K/month mortgage pmt lives in a very expensive home, and if they can't afford to go without one of their two incomes for say 8 weeks, then they're not very prudent or smart. (I personally think it's irresponsible and dangerous for a mother to leave her newborn for 8 hrs a day only 8 weeks or less after the birth, but that's another subject). What happens when one of them takes ill with say pneumonia, and has to take a month off work? What happens when one of them comes down with any other malady or disease, and is off work for 8 weeks? It certainly happens. Like you did say, its a matter of "economics", i.e. greed for uninterrupted money flow that causes working women to get abortions. I think that's wrong, as you know. No excuse.
