More news!! Sino-foreign co-operation source of e-bookstore 03/11/1999 CHINA'S largest Internet-based bookstore, the Beijing Book Centre Online, was inaugurated on Tuesday in Beijing. The online bookstore is the result of a project jointly developed by Compaq China and China Information Highway Corporation (CIHC). Its website is bjbb.com.cn. "The opening of the Beijing Book Centre Online marks the launch of a project which will turn Beijing into an electronic commerce capital," said Lin Wenyi, vice-mayor of Beijing. She made the remarks yesterday at the opening ceremony of the online bookstore. More than 200 government officials and representatives attended the event, including personnel from the Ministry of Information Industry, the State Internal Trade Bureau and the People's Bank of China (PBOC). Developing over just six months, the Beijing Book Centre Online so far has a data bank containing more than 160,000 Chinese books, making it the largest online bookstore for Chinese books in Asia. Great efforts have been made to ensure the reliable operation of the online bookstore, Lin said. CIHC is responsible for technology deployment, systems integration and building the infrastructure to support the online bookstore. Compaq provided servers as well as technical and network architecture support to the project. The project also involved the support of the PBOC and 11 commercial banks. At present, the PBOC is organizing a national bank card exchange centre, and Chinese banks are now jointly building a Secure Authentication Centre to support online banking services. The national bank card exchange centre is expected to be ready at the end of this year. Internet-based online payment is now under testing. "The first of its kind in the capital, the online bookstore will act as a catalyst for e-commerce development in China," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq president and CEO, adding that he was impressed by government support for developing e-commerce in the capital.
