I would not expect that when you have a "hot design" like a K7 and a higer clock than Intel you would go with what you intend the product to have. This says to me that they may offer 550 Mhz and 600 Mhz K7 at the outset.

Re: "If AMD are planning to ship product within the next three months then presumably they have produced working samples of the core that is going into production? If so, wouldn't you expect them to hand select one of these samples that performs ABOVE the target spec for mass yield of a production run?"

Exactly! They would pick am outlier and jack up the voltage. Intel no doubt did it and hit 800Mhz. AMD did it and hit 600Mhz.

Gopher,

Aren't you worried that the demo was only at 600 MHz?

The fact that they have anything running at 600 MHz is very encouraging. This is a very young core which has not yet been through much speedpath work. It is competing against a 6+ year core from Intel, which has been beaten to death to get to 550 MHz.

I will be surprised if K7 isn't up near 800 MHz by the end of the year.
