Mylan gets tentative FDA OK on generic Pfizer drug

PITTSBURGH, March 19 (Reuters) - Mylan Laboratories Inc.
(NYSE:MYL - news) said Friday it had received tentative
approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a
generic equivalent of Pfizer Inc.'s (NYSE:PFE - news)
Procardia XL, used to treat hypertension and angina.

Mylan said it had received tentative approval to manufacture and market Nifedipine Extended-Release Tablets, 30 mg.

Mylan said it was the first to file its application to the FDA for the product and will be entitled to 180-day exclusivity pending settlement of legal and patent issues.

Mylan said Procardia XL ranks among the top 25 drugs prescribed in the U.S.

Shares of Mylan closed at 30-1/4 on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, below their 12-month high of 35-15/16 but well above their 12-month low of 20-5/8.
