Agreed, the Omnia, Lightera combination provides most of the functionality in narrowband, wideband and broadband DSCs (TLAB cash cows). The TLABs line of telco "plumbing" products is getting seriously long in the tooth. Over time I see them going the way of Telco systems, a low margin commodity plumbing player. Now I'm not saying that this will happen over night or that CIEN will put them out of business, I'm just commenting on where I think the technology is heading.

<<you have to admit that its really does not make any business sense whatever>>

It was SUPPOSED to be a joke and nothing more. You are absolutely right that it would make no sense, with their current technologies, for CIEN to acquire TLAB. CIEN is at the cutting edge of its niche, whereas I'm not so sure TLAB can make that claim. What might make TLAB attractive would be #1 its management team and #2 a somewhat broader range of "product". However that is not where CIEN is headed, and I don't think Nettles and Co. take a back seat to Mr. Bircks. Not being a techie, my opinion doesn't count for much, but as far as I can tell the Lightera and Omnia acquisitions demonstrate just how clear and strong a vision CIEN's management has.
BTW Ciena's current annual report is a PR gem. I would urge anyone who hasn't already seen it to get a hold of one and take a look.
