Kathy, a Specialist is the guy on the floor of the NYSE that performs the same sort of function as the market maker on the NASDAQ. The Specialist stands at a "post" and facilitates the trading in "his" stock, sometimes buying and selling in his own personal account to "maintain an orderly market" in the stock.
