Talk n' Play Review: *** 1/2/*****

"...Talk n' Play is a unique product, one most gamers will be surprised to see the Thrustmaster logo associated with. After all, it's not a stick, wheel, or game-pad; it's an Internet voice application bundled with one of those nifty headset/microphone combination units.

Some of you may be familiar with shareware Internet radio applications like Roger Wilco or Battlefield Communicator. Those are the products that are most similar in function to Talk n' Play, but the big difference is you can currently use those programs for free, while Talk n' Play is a retail boxed product.

Talk n' Play ships on a CD-ROM, and installation is a breeze. Once installed you'll need to register the software online. The software also has ICQ-like functionality, allowing you to see when others are online and send messages or chat with them. Once in chat you can launch a Talk n' Play conference, or you can browse the Talk n' Play website to find a conference to join or to create one of your own.

The software is based on Intel's Multi-Point Audio Technology. With two people it works well in Jane's WWII Fighters, Tribes, Delta Force and Turok 2, but to really hear the other player in WWII Fighters you must turn down the in-game music and the engine sound effects. The system supports up to four players, but on a dial-up connection it works best with two. Thrustmaster claims support for any game or Internet gaming service, and bundles 25 Hoyle board and card games to play over WON.net. Additionally, they tossed in Golf Pro 98, and Internet versions of Red Baron II and 3D-Ultra Mini Golf.

Talk n' Play is not a major leap beyond ICQ and a program like Roger Wilco, but for $29 you get a decent headset complete with in-line volume and microphone on/off controls. There's also an input jack at the end of the cord so you can leave your speakers plugged in. The audio quality isn't that bad either. Talk n' Play won't revolutionize gaming and voice communications over the Internet, but it's a nice single package with the tools needed to find, chat, talk and play with friends over the Internet, provided they have Talk n' Play too..."
