I read recently that Time is considering Adolf Hitler as man of the century. From a PR perspective, that can't be a good move - and I doubt they will do it, nonetheless from a historical perspective I suspect Hitler truly is the man of the century and will be revered as the most heinous leader ever. I certainly think Hitler eclipses Caligula, for example. Isn't that a sobering thought to think that in 2000 years people will be talking about Hitler in sort of surreal terms as we discuss the Romans now.

<<You can certainly make the argument that what I am talking about is utopia, not practical, or even not moral.>>

Far from it. However, your presumption here is, if we can find another recourse for the worst example you can come up with, "Hitler," then there is room for consideration for the rest. In order to do that you have to give the rest a stay of execution, so that the door of opportunity remains open. The problem is, you deny responsibility for the perpetrators who use the penal system like a revolving door...get fed, get warm, get some rehab...return to society, murder, molest, rob, and rape...return to prison...get fed...return to society, assault, cheat, etc. etc.

The other problem is they had an opportunity and they blew it, that is why they are imprisoned. So you give them an opportunity to regain their opportunity to live in a free society by pardoning them. They they repeat. Hmmm but you want to give them opportunity to redeme themselves because they blew the opportunity to regain the opportunity they had been given originally to live in a free society. You just want to make certain the door of opportunity remains open.

Fine, if you want to release these hordes on the rest of us then stand in my face and take responsibility for the repeat child molester you returned to society. Do this while I am standing over one of my broken daughters (imaginary situation). There are hordes of them (not imaginary). They know the justice system is incapable of dealing with them and they know it is because we have disabled the justice system and enabled them to have their way with us(opportunity never stops knocking).

Your "what if" scenario is attractive except that it doesn't happen. The reverse does happen. The escalating numbers of criminals are being educated and trained by the previous generation of creeps that we forgave. Anyway as I pointed out, if you can find one convert, I can find 1000's who are being enabled by this attitude. If you don't want responsibility for supporting the death penalty, then take responsibility for the marauding hordes of criminals being unleashed, by attitudes like yours. Your attitude is to forgive them, generous of you, since you are forgiving them for what they are doing to the rest of us. I assume you have forgiven Bill Clinton for raping Juanita too. Very considerate of you.
