NEW DELHI, INDIA, 1999 MAR 18 (NB) -- By CT Mahabharat, Newsbytes.
Dell Computer Corporation [NADAQ:DELL], which manufactures and
supports a full range of personal computer systems, is planning to set
up a 100 percent subsidiary in Bangalore.

The subsidiary, Dell India, is expected to be fully operational by the
end of this year. To support its new marketing initiative in the
country, Dell plans to pump in $5 million to $10 million by year's
end, a part of which would be used for the new subsidiary.

Says Ron Goh, vice president (Asia), Dell Computer Corp: "We have
decided to focus on the growing Indian market. Our performance here
has not been satisfactory, and so we plan to have a direct presence in
India."

So far, Dell had been operating through its liaison office based in
Bangalore and had 10 distributors which included CMS Computers Ltd,
Mastek Ltd, Minicomp Ltd, and Rolta India Ltd. Dell, however, plans to
continue its partnership with the existing distributors.

"At present, our distributors who package services along with the Dell
hardware, are targeting all markets besides undertaking after sales
jobs for every segment. In future, each distributor would target niche
markets only."

Dell Computer Japan has selected Infosys Technologies Ltd., to provide
custom development for the company's online commerce applications.
This is in line with Dell's e-commerce strategy which calls for Dell
and its subsidiaries to be able to conduct 50 percent of all business
online by the year 2000.

George Mora, online services manager responsible for all online
operations of Dell Japan, says that Infosys was selected for an
initial project involving development of a database to support local
pricing and configuration operations. When that project was
successfully completed, Infosys began a second project to add
functionality to Dell Japan's online store which had been running
since March 1997.

Adds Goh:"To expand Dell's operations overseas, Dell Computer has
divided the world markets into four regions: US, Europe, Japan and
Asia Pacific. Of the Asia Pacific revenues which accounted for $1.09
billion, about 12 percent of this came from India. With the new
initiatives in place, we expect the country's market share to go up to
20 percent by January 2000."

The company has nine subsidiaries in Asia: Malaysia, Australia, New
Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, China, and Hong Kong.
