News March 25, 15:59 Eastern Time ANNAPOLIS, MD. (March 25) BUSINESS WIRE -March 25, 1999-- TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) and Lucent Technologies announced today an enhanced PrePaid Wireless Service solution for CDMA and TDMA networks that supports Calling Card Services, Flexible Rating and Short Message Service Balance Notification. Wireless service providers will now have the ability to offer prepaid services that integrate with wireless calling card services. Prepaid calls and calling card calls are rated similarly but provisioned differently. Now prepaid subscribers can split airtime between a prepaid wireless account and a prepaid calling card. For example, if a subscriber purchases a $20 calling card and uses $10, they can transfer the remaining $10 to their prepaid wireless account. Wireless service providers also have more rate plans to offer their prepaid subscribers. Flexible Rating allows service providers to create custom rate plans that address specific needs. Rate plans are added to the rating engine in real time and do not impact the performance of the Prepaid Service. Once rate plans are added into the rating engine, they are immediately available for provisioning to subscribers. Short Message Service Balance Notification sends a prepaid subscriber their prepaid account balance in the form of a short message. Prepaid subscribers now have a choice in the method they are notified of their account balance. Account balances can either be announced with voice prompts or sent in the form of a short message. The Short Message Service Center (SMSC), also provided by TCS and Lucent, has been integrated with the Prepaid Wireless Application to complement each other. The Prepaid Application sends data to the SMSC which formats the data and sends it to the corresponding prepaid wireless subscriber's handset. "Our Prepaid Wireless Application helps service providers differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive prepaid market," said Tim Lorello, Vice President of the TCS Network Intelligence Group. "The new enhanced Prepaid Wireless Service demonstrates our ability to partner with leading-edge companies like TCS to provide our customers new and innovative services," said Curtis Holmes, Intelligent Network vice president for Lucent's Communications Software Group.
