Spaceway has been in the works for a long time. It is one of the original recipients of Ka-band spectrum along with Cyberstar, Astrolink, Teledesic, KaStar, VisionStar(I think), and a slew of others who have Ka slots, like Echostar and Orion.

I still don't get the need to spend $4 billion to cover the world with broadband GEOs when present sats can do a pretty decent job of it. Show me the demand first. A fully meshed bandwidth on demand system, which is what Spaceway touts as a big advantage, is available right now. I can use ViaSat equipment and Loral sats and have that market covered. There is no way all these systems get built. Too much money involved. Once again, consolidation is in order.
