FYI - Siemens is on a shopping spree.

Siemens To Acquire Redstone Communications
(03/18/99, 3:23 p.m. ET)
By Andrew Cray, Data Communications
Siemens was expected to announce Thursday morning the acquisition of yet another data-networking company, according to sources inthe investment community.

Redstone Communications, in Westford, Mass., has signed on with the European telecommunications giant for a reported $500 million -- nearly as much as the two previous acquisitions Munich, Germany-based Siemens has made thus far this year combined. Sources said the high price was the result of an unprecedented bidding war between Siemens and other vendors, including Alcatel, in Paris, and Lucent, in Murray Hill, N.J.

Redstone makes an edge aggregation router for ISPs that combines traffic from multiple T1 access lines and funnels it to gigabit routers in the core of the network. The technology would fill a much-needed hole in Siemens' new Unisphere Solutions subsidiary, which is strong on ATM-based access devices and core switches, but weak on network edge devices.

Sources said another equipment vendor, Nortel Networks, in Mississauga, Ontario, is close to its own ISP equipment deal -- with Shasta Networks, in Sunnyvale, Calif., which makes an IP service-provisioning platform. That deal is rumored to be valued at $400 million.

The column also says Jeff Hershey of Awad Asset Management, which is part of Raymond James Financial (RJF:NYSE), thinks the recent slump in Cooper's (COO:NYSE) stock price makes it vulnerable to a takeover by a larger lensmaker, such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ:NYSE) or Bausch & Lomb (BOL:NYSE). Awad Asset Management owns 5% of the stock. The column says top Cooper officials were traveling and couldn't be reached for comment.
