Siemens to make Oracle8i Appliance servers

By InfoWorld Electric staff

Oracle and Siemens on Friday said they expect Siemens to be the first European hardware vendor to manufacture the Oracle8i Appliance, previously code-named Raw Iron. Siemens will offer the Oracle8i Appliance on its Primergy line of servers, which are based on Intel Pentium II Xeon processors, the two companies said. Pricing and release dates were not available. The Oracle8i Appliance is a thin server that runs the Oracle8i database. Offered as an integrated hardware-and-software platform, it is designed to be used to access the Internet and intranet applications and databases. The Oracle8i Appliance from Siemens will help European companies control costs by eliminating the need to manage multiple hardware and software platforms, Oracle said in a statement. The company is also working with Siemens on other joint initiatives in the areas of I-commerce and data warehousing solutions, the company added. Siemens AG, in Munich and Berlin, can be reached at www.siemens.de. Oracle Corp. in Redwood Shores, Calif., is at www.oracle.com.
