[OT] VLSI Rejects Philips Offer, Seeks Options
Reuters - 02:30 a.m. Mar 19, 1999 Eastern

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - VLSI Technology Inc. Thursday rejected a $777
million hostile bid from the Dutch electronics giant Philips Electronics NV, but the
computer chip maker left the door open for a higher offer or a merger with another
company.

In a statement, VLSI said it rejected Philips' $17-per-share offer based on
presentations from financial advisers, but the chip maker said it believed ''interested
parties,'' which could include Philips, will recognize ''the strong business
potential'' of the company.

Hey, Duane, I have a comment on your post, >>>My own field was telecom, so I tend to favor some companies in that area, and
especially like VTSS for its specialized gallium arsenide chips,<<<

I'm perplexed about Gallium Arsenide and VTSS. It seems to me that silicon is closing in on Gallium wrt speed, and it certainly has it all over Ge in density, manufacturability, yields, you name it. So, what's the future of VTSS? I mean, LSI itself should be threatening VTSS in the area of high speed switches for telecom, ATE, etc. I must be wrong because Vitesse keeps on growing.

Cheers on a Friday,

Tony
