Bindusager Reddy,

I disagree! While not a big fan of Chambers, I am a big fan of the job that he has done as CEO at Cisco. He is obviously concerned about Lucent/Ascend or he wouldn't keep bringing them up. He had better be concerned because they have set their sights on Cisco and this isn't going to be like taking on Bay or Cabletron. Lucent has deep pockets and a visionary CEO! (Cabletron had deep pockets and no brains! While Bay was an abortion from the get go!)

I think that if you were to buy Ascend (Roll it into Lucent) and Cisco today and compare stock evaluations in 5 years I wouldn't be surprised if Lucent outperforms Cisco 2 to 1. Why? Cisco's P/E is outrageous and I think that in the next few years they will have a few earnings hiccups that might bring them back down out of the clouds a little bit.

Cheers,

Steve

I agree with your comments about CSCO's roll-up strategy. It will be interesting to see if its hollowness (technical and personnel) is revealed or if a $500B market opportunity will cover all mistakes.

Chambers disingenuous and propagandistic comments really grate. In a 4/99 Wired cover story, Chambers points out that there is a $500B data networking market opportunity in the rush to the Web and data subsuming voice. If true, how can he say LU's $20B stock purchase of ASND is overvalued? Won't ASND pay for itself in a few years? I think LU/ASND and CSCO are perfectly positioned to capitalize on the infrastructure build-out. I just really dislike the way Chambers feels he has to slander his true competitors in order to do it. What an ass.

I posted the article and my comments on the CSCO thread. Typical BS responses ("What's your ax to grind?") without substance. Greed blinding critical analysis.
