"The business model for on-line banking is practically nil," said James Marks, electronic commerce analyst at Deutsche Bank Securities.

The business model for NOT doing it IS NIL.

Both major banks here in Pittsburgh understand it. They're both building giant "operations centers" (basically drive farms w/fiber optic lines attached) here and planning for the "next highest use" of their suburban acreage and downtown vaults. Look for across the board write-offs similar to Baby Bells 5 years ago.

Also looming are nonbank competitors like Charles Schwab & Co. Within six months, the San Francisco-based discount brokerage firm plans to offer all customers an account called Access.

Great article, Benny...

I especially like the comparison to Amazon/Barnes & Noble. Maybe the Street will finally wake up and realize the potential of CF (in both scale AND the potential to actually be realize profits, which have eluded Amazon thus far).

>>>Denny Allen, MBanx senior manager of public affairs, admitted that the unit's success comes at the expense of its parent. "But we knew that if we did not provide this service to our customers, somebody else would come along, and we would lose them completely," she said.

Like a Gilligans Island TV sitcom, but instead of the SS Minnow...a Canoe full of Cannibals.
