Microsoft dumps the problem in Intel's lap

Microsoft Offers Privacy Programs on Site

Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., offered two free software programs
on its Internet site Thursday to strip out an identifying number that could be
used to trace the authorship of some electronic documents. One program
is a small patch to repair the problem and prevent the number from being
planted in such documents. The second removes the number from existing
documents. Microsoft confirmed earlier this month that its latest version of
Windows generates a unique serial number for each computer. That
number partly is planted within some documents created with its popular
collection of Office 97 business programs, which include Word and Excel.
Those numbers are part of a 32-digit identifier created by Windows 98
whenever customers register their software with Microsoft.

Now Intel can "take charge" of attaching those CPU-ID numbers to everything and take all of the flack. what a wonderful relationship Intel has with Microsoft. (Fall Guy)
