I was right in the thick of the argument. I posted as I did because there were people who expressed disbelief and because I thought Paglia's comments interesting.

I didn't mean to adamantly deny its veracity. Do you think my position was 'curious' in making that point? I certainly can tell you that it wasn't politically motivated. It is sometimes hard to believe how self destructive people can be, and politics really had nothing to do with my questioning response. Well, I just thought of something. In a way, you could say it did have a 'political' cast, in that if a horrifying story is told about some group without known enemies, one would be less likely to be suspicious and reserve judgement than if a similar story is told about a group that is so hated as are gays. But is that a curious attitude, really?

I just put 'gerbil' into search, and found the earlier exchange. I see I said in response to a post by LRR that i was also suspicious about whether the story was true or not, and told the gerbil story. My last comment to you on this subject came when I realized that you had somehow misconstrued my comments. You had said to me, <<Unfortunately, there are many true things in the world which are unpleasant or even shocking.>> so, to clarify, I wrote to you, <<So sad, so true. You do know that I said I 'suspected' it was myth along the lines of the gerbil myth, simply because it's so incomprehensible? I claimed no knowledge at all on this subject.>> I hope you will believe me, Christine, that I never meant to contradict you, only to express some, er, feelings, and that I had no political agenda at all. I didn't mean any disrespect for you.
