Novell Hosts Internet Printing Community Interoperability Testing

Open Internet Printing Protocol Will Allow Standardized Printing
Across

Internet

WHO: Novell(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL) is the world's leading

network software provider and a key partner behind the

development of an open standards-based Internet Printing

Protocol (IPP).

WHAT & WHEN: Novell, a leader in printing on the network,
continued its

commitment to open standards-based networking by hosting the

second IPP "bake-off," in which the printing community

tested interoperability of their solutions with the Internet

Printing Protocol. Twenty-five printer and software vendors

attended the bake-off at Novell's Orem, Utah, campus,

including Apple, AUCO, Axis, Canon, EFI, Epson, Extended
Systems, Fuji Xerox, Genoa, Hewlett-Packard, i-data, IBM,

JCI, Komatsu, Kyocera, Lexmark, Microsoft, Netsilicon,

Novell, Ricoh, Shinesoft, Sun, Tektronix and Xerox. All

successfully tested their solutions with IPP.

By working to deliver support for the Internet Printing

Protocol for future versions of Novell Distributed Print

Services (NDPS(TM)) on NetWare(R), Novell plans to

strengthen its market-leading position in supporting

directory-based Internet printing. At the Internet Printing

Protocol bake-off last week, Novell demonstrated its IPP

implementation, which marries the power of NDPS and Novell

Directory Services(R) (NDS(TM)) with the open standard

printing protocol IPP.

WHY & HOW: The Internet Printing Protocol will allow any user
with an Internet connection to send a document to any printer that

is connected to the Internet. Companies with mobile users or

remote employees will be able to use printers that support

IPP to easily send business materials directly to a printer

instead of e-mail, fax or overnight delivery. Users of

Novell's IPP implementation will also benefit from tight

integration with NDPS, which enables easy management of

users and printers.

CONTACT: Press may access Novell announcements and
company

information on the World Wide Web at

www.novell.com/pressroom.

About Internet Printing Protocol

The Internet Printing Protocol is designed to extend print-use
models by leveraging the Internet. The Printer Working Group
(PWG), a consortium of all major companies involved in printing,
developed the printing standard. The protocol now has been
ratified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a formal
standard.

Hi Paul - Maybe Novell needs to develop a "portal" site where they can sell internet "services". COMPAQ is developing an internet service portal using their Alta-Vista asset.

Here are the reserved domain names Novell has already obtained.

BSNETQA.COM
NOVELL-LAB.COM
BORDERTEST.COM
BIGBANGS.COM
STEVEHARLOW.COM
COOLTEST.COM
NLDAP.COM
N-COGNITO.COM
TECTRAIN.COM
EMA-CORP.COM
==================================================================

I do not see any names that would represent a "service portal". It is interesting to note that they may be developing company specific internet sites (i.e. EMA-CORP.COM) for key clients. Is this what CEO Schmidt defined as "consulting" and "service" revenue opportunities?
