*Service Start September* Though that depends on launches and everything clicking into place. I'm hopeful of a betalaunch earlier than that. I'd like to see handsets being produced and used in May even if the system only works sometimes during the day and the minutes are given away free.

Meanwhile, Iridium woes here:

I disagree with the 'giveaway' handsets. It seems to me better to give away the minutes as they are the things which are going to waste. Sell the handsets! Anyway, they can't 'giveaway' the handsets because they'd have to tie the customer to a minimum monthly minute consumption or whatever to justify the capital. That is just complexity and trouble.

Better to just sell the handsets and give the minutes until demand is up then raise the price to what the market will bear.

I'm not suggesting being deceptive to customers; tell them that's what the plan is. Then if the prices get too high, the subscribers who don't think it worth the money can sell their handset and go to Globalstar or just back to terrestrial. They could be given a maximum price above which it wouldn't go - say $3 per minute as part of their handset deal.

That's my theory anyway.

JGoren,

Not a clue. It can start the service tomorrow without the handsets like IRID. (gg)

I assume it will start in late October. That will catch up the holiday shopping spree. Hopefully!
