<<This is probably the greatest risk for the Orb product. Investments are huge and part costs are high since per wafer head yields are typically low on the front end. The risk for Orb is that they are obviously forward pricing the drive since the volume production is the only way to make a profit at their price point. It will take time and cash for Orb to get to volume.... >> that's true. Orb is built on a house of loans - Syquest was built similar relative to addtl. share authorization. Orb is being financed by some Asian banks which have little current room.

Frank -

Re: MR heads on tape

You may be right about MR being useable with flexible media. Tape is very different from disks, though. I would expect that it would be some time before we see MR or GMR in Zip or Clik! type devices.

I agree with you that Orb is probably not profitable now, and won't be unless they can get production volumes up to high levels.

I wouldn't be surprised if when they formally introduce the Internal 250 the will disclose that it will be able to read clik disks. Backward compatiblity WITHIN the Iomega Product Line:)

Or maybe a Zip 250 Plus External Drive for $199-$229 after they drop the original 250 price a bit
