Fore Systems Stk Up 18% After NationsBanc Report

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of Fore Systems (FORE) surged Friday after NationsBanc Montgomery issued a glowing report, calling the company "an attractive acquisition candidate" and touting its "leading edge" technology.

In the report, NationsBanc analyst Al Tobia and associates Gabe Jenkins and Clifton Gray said that the manufacturer of hardware and software based on high-speed technology for advanced computer networks is trading at 50% of its private market value. They put that value at $30 a share.

"Consolidation in the voice/data converged market is heating up and FORE is the only remaining pure play in the data switching market," the report said.

"FORE is suffering from a lack of scale in its selling efforts," the report continued, "but its technology is leading edge as evidenced by its high gross margins." NationsBanc said the gross margins were between 53.4% and 58.1%.

Fore shares were recently up 3 1/16, or 21.1%, at 17 9/16 on Nasdaq volume of more than 20 million shares. Fore's average daily volume is only 3.6 million.
