ITU 3G Deal. Reason for runup today. Japanese interests, particularly DoCoMo, appears to have been the catalyst as we have discussed previously. TOKYO (Nikkeio)--The ITU has given the basic green light to global standards for next-generation high-speed cellular telephone transmissions, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Saturday morning edition, citing sources at Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The decision came Thursday during a metting in La Fortaleza, Brazil, where the group convened March 8 to hammer out the standards. The transmission standards will allow cellular subscribers to use their own phones anywhere in the world. Within the ITU two opposing camps formed on the issue of transmission standards. One side was pushing for the adoption of North American cellular phone transmission standards, while the other advocated standards established in Europe and Japan. According to the sources, the groups struck a compromise in the interest of hastening the service's launch. Their new proposal recommends the development of cellular telephones integrating both standards, paving the way for global services. NTT Commpunications Network, Inc., known as NTT DoCoMo plans to launch the next-generation service in Japan in 2001.
