biz.yahoo.com

Friday March 19, 7:21 pm Eastern Time

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 19 (Reuters) - The Internet auction site eBay Inc(Nasdaq:EBAY - news) has been penetrated by a hacker who managed to take down the company's home page and achieved extensive access to other content, Forbes Digital Tool reported Friday.

The report said the popular online auction community was hacked last Saturday by a 22-year-old college student who continues to have access to the site, and the ability to change auction prices, post fake ads, divert traffic to other sites, or take down the entire network.

Forbes said the hacker, operating under the name MagicFX, went so far as to leave a signature by posting a message after taking down the home page stating: ''Proof by MagicFX that you can't always trust people... not even huge companies.''

The report said the hacker revealed that he was a 22-year-old college student.

eBay declined to comment specifically on the report other than to say it is ''working closely with law enforcement on the hacking attempts of the site Saturday and Wednesday.''

The company also said that no credit card information was compromised.

Growth from 13 weeks (one quarter) ago: 80 percent

Please note that the growth from 13 weeks ago is an estimate, because an auction count not being recorded 13 weeks ago. I took the average for 12 weeks ago and 14 weeks ago, and used that as my basis.

Interestingly, the eBay auction count is about the same as it was two weeks ago. Perhaps a simple lull, or perhaps auction counts are adjusting to the slower traffic growth to the eBay site.
