Burt, >>>He phoned the order in today (a PII) and
they told him that today was the last day that they are taking PII orders! Don't
know if this is true (it's the first I heard of it) but if it is, wow! Rapid transition to
PIII and celeron exclusively for Dell, who can certainly move boxes.<<<

Actually, Dell is going all AMD, as of tomorrow. Turns out Michael Dell's father and Jerry Sanders found out they are old college fraternity brothers, and Dell senior owed Sanders a favor after Sanders saved his bacon when a frat party prank almost got him kicked out of school. So, Dell Sr. told Michael he needed a favor and the rest is history.

Burt - Re: "hey told him that today was the last day that they are taking PII orders! "

This certainly is PLAUSIBLE.

Dell claims to have a 6 1/2 day inventory of components.

Thus, with just a little advance notice to Intel, they can notify Intel to STOP shipping Pentium IIs and START shipping Pentium IIIs.

Since Pentium II motherboards, chip sets, etc are all compatible with the Pentium III, I think only BIOS chips need to be changed.

This is the BEAUTY of the Build To Order/Direct model - Great for DELL and even GREATER for Intel - since those that use this BTO aren't sitting on 3 months worth of "outdated" CPUs.
