Tenchusatsu, >>>So what if AMD prices the K7 at $1,000 less than a comparable Xeon? What are
they going to do, tell a customer that they can save $4,000 on a $40,000 server? If
the processor, chipset, or server platform is even a little less stable than Intel's,
that's going to cost the customer much more in lost work and downtime.<<<

Interesting you should talk about stability of the processor, chipset, or server platform (of non-Intel hardware in your context). I wonder if Intel has reliability numbers on the competition's products, sort of to subtly have up their sleeve and use for FUD or as a tie-breaker. Dirty pool, I suppose, but the poor yield begets poor reliability premise must be very tempting to use as a trump card. Of course, there is no question as to which X86 producing company has the best yields, by far.

..then again, that's just what AMD is trying to do. Have you seen chiptech.com yet? You should like it -- it quotes you -- and it shows why K7 as currently envisioned has to attack the medium-high end server space, and why if (big if..) AMD can come through on its promises within its timetable, it has a shot, at least at crimping Intel's Xeon margins. Merced is late; if K7 is not, they will be able to save customers money on an (ostensibly) better, faster SMP box. Wonder if it's on time..

liked your post re cheaper k7 for servers. in other words:

assume your job is to keep servers & computer equip
running smoothly. decision is "i can save $4000 and risk
daily screwups that draw second guessing or negative
attention to me or i can go intc with smooth sailing
and absolute justification.

any worker (like myself) who sees the server go down a
couple times a week knows this is a simple decision
