Seagate Software Delivers Open File Backup Technology for NetWare
Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option Protects NetWare 4.x Critical Open Files and Databases

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Seagate Software, a leading provider of storage management solutions, today announced Open File Option for Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare with support for NetWare 4.x. This enhanced open-file technology provides uninterrupted data protection for network environments that require 24-hours-a-day/seven-days-a-week accessibility. Using an innovative approach to open-file backup, the new Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option provides integrated protection of active e-mail, database and other data files -- even while information is being entered or changed by users -- for reliable data security and integrity.

''As one of our strategic partners, Seagate Software has worked closely with Novell to ensure that Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare strictly adheres to Novell's standards and has again taken the lead in developing backup technologies for NetWare,'' said Brian Foustyn, NetWare Product Marketing, Novell. ''Seagate Software's newest development, Open File Option, demonstrates its commitment to the NetWare market.''

The Open File Option is completely integrated into Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare. This level of integration allows the user to simply select to use or not to use the open-file technology. With the Open File Option enabled, Seagate Backup Exec creates and backs up a point-in-time snapshot of the disc volume and eliminates the need for manual grouping of files or time-consuming configuration. Seagate Backup Exec accesses the point-in-time snapshot for backup purposes, while still allowing users access to their files. Dynamic changes to the original data can still take place since the backup is being made from the point-in-time snapshot.

''Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option supports application-level data protection to provide maximum reliability, performance and ease-of-use,'' said Michael Colemere, vice president, product management and business alliances, Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group. ''Furthering our commitment to the NetWare market, we have designed Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option to provide true enterprise data protection for the most critical files and databases -- the ones that remain open around the clock.''

As a reliable, high-performance and easy-to-use data-protection solution, Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare provides advanced features such as the new Seagate Working Set Backup, advanced barcode reader and media portal support, multi-platform centralized management and Intelligent Disaster Recovery. In addition, Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare fully supports Novell Storage Management Services (SMS), Target Service Agents and Novell Directory Services (NDS). Continuing to expand its high-performance features, Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare automates network backups through a comprehensive scheduler, providing easy unattended operation. With Seagate Software Agent Accelerator technology, performance is further improved by minimizing network traffic and automating the backup of remote servers using distributed processing and source compression. In addition to the Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option, Seagate Software provides native database backup agents for Oracle8 databases.

Seagate Software's list of Novell ''firsts'' includes: first Novell ''YES Certified'' backup application for NetWare 4.0, IntranetWare and NetWare 5; first support of Novell SMS standards; first Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option to be Integrated with Novell's SMS; first storage solution certified for the emerging Fibre Channel market (Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option for NetWare); first certification with BorderManager; first adoption of the System Independent Data Format (SIDF) standard; and first SMS-compliant backup of NDS and extended schema.
