Gary, the wfmi store in Monterey appears to be well-run with good aesthetics. It's an attractive environment.

The Whole Foods in Berkeley - which may be the one you were talking about - is pretty terrible in much the ways you describe. But I've been in the two in Austin, Texas - and they seem clean and well run, genuine "food as theater."

Gary, we don't have any WFMI in Ft. Collins, but I have friends who speak well of one in the Denver area.
