George,

There is an outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) that has resulted in several deaths and the commencement of an exercise to slaughter and bury up to 311,000 pigs. In addition a new strain of virus responsible for 5 victims (human) has been discovered and announced today. Members of the World Health Org and the Center for Disease Control are due to arrive Tuesday to help in the assessment. Large scale spraying and fogging operations have also been started. I am not sure of the death toll so far. There is a vaccine available and I am surprised that there hasn't been a more concerted effort to innoculate more people.

It is difficult to assess the dangers as the papers are basically government parrots and the government is not above making misleading statements. We are going to call our physician on Monday to see what his recommendation would be regarding the innoculations. JE is endemic to Malaysia but this is a particularly nasty outbreak. Normally, I understand, the only folks who are recommended to get innoculated are live pig handlers. But if it is a mosquito born disease it seems to me that the danger could spread easily.

Best,
Stitch
