Philips begins sampling next-generation chipset for TDMA market By Mark LaPedus Electronic Buyers' News (03/09/99, 9:24 p.m. EDT) While its parent company is engaged in a hostile takeover of VSLI Technology Inc., Philips Semiconductors has quietly begun sampling its next-generation chipset for the exploding TDMA digital cellular market. Philips Semiconductors, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based subsidiary of Dutch-based Philips Electronics, has begun sampling the SA3600, a three-chip, 3.-v solution designed for handsets based on the IS-136 standard, according to sources. The dual-band chipset from the company is geared for a specific customer--Ericsson Inc. - one of the world's largest handset makers that is in a battle in the digital cellular market against Motorola, Nokia, and other OEMs, sources added. Ironically, VLSI Technology's largest customer in the wireless handset is also Ericsson, reportedly giving Philips Electronics a sound reason to make a bid to acquire the San Jose, Calif.-based ASIC house - albeit hostile. VLSI Technology designs and makes GSM and TDMA chipsets for Ericsson. The U.S. company is also struggling to get its CDMA chipset out the door, reportedly for Ericsson, as well, sources added. edtn.com
