The sizes are simply ... the way I understand it if the bid is higher on the bid they are looking for stock to buy ... or rather investor's shares that will sell. With a smaller size on the ask any buying will be limited to the size which is all the MMs have to fill before UT (Up Ticking). Now each MM has a different size depending who is on the bid and the ask. Generally there are two MMs that make the market. If one steps down or away or is out bid then that MM's size is posted along with their offer.

a 50 x 5 is 5,000 on the bid and a 500 on the ask.

I could be wrong but this is how I understand it.
