excerpt from SmartMoney

Another company that could be worth watching, although it is not a pure play auction site, is Barry Diller's Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch (TMCS). Jupiter's Swerdlow says Ticketmaster made a savvy move earlier this year to get into the online auction business by purchasing CityAuction, a site that serves more like a classified listing online. Swerdlow says CityAuction will benefit from being a part of the Ticketmaster network of sites. And she thinks that an auction site focusing on linking buyers and sellers in the same market is an interesting niche. After all, you probably wouldn't want to ship large items across the country if you could find someone locally to bid for the product.

So there are some compelling alternatives to investing in eBay. Of course, there is a lot of competition in this business. Portals such as Yahoo! (YHOO) have their own auction sites. Online computer retailer Cyberian Outpost (COOL) recently launched its own site and Dell Computer (DELL) has registered for a DellAuction site. And eBay itself is a juggernaut. But executives of other auction sites are undaunted. "EBay has done a marvelous job and they are the horse at this point. But there is plenty of business and opportunities to go around. We are certainly not intimidated by the competition," says Bidnow.com's McLaughlin.

When is Lycos deal finished (one way or the other)?

With all this brainpower (ha!) this should have been concluded.
Then again I am just a mere mortal.
