In regards to WDM hardware, the company that comes off the top of my head is Uniphase (UNPH). There the best pure play out there right now. They have a thread on SI:

Uniphase is merging with JDS Fitel to become the undisputed leader in fiber optic components. Unlike semiconductors, these components are very, very difficult, to design, test, and produce.

George Gilder calls Uniphase the Intel of the "telecosm."
