I think the problem with your bent spoke idea is this.
A spoke needs to be strong under tension. Bend a piece of steel and voilà - a spring. So you make some thunderbolt Spring-E-Spokes and your rim and center will not have a fixed relationship. A real bear when you try to locate the bracket for the brake.

When I was a kid, a lot of ponds in Virginia had boats made out of hoods of older cars. Couple of '49 Plymouth hoods welded together back to back and you have a canoe. I can swim, canoe?
