It may be true that 95 % expire worthless but that is misleading. An option will either expire worthless or it will expire in the money. The vast majority of ITM options are cashed out and don't expire at all. Look at open interest at the beginning in the end of expiration week.

People with INT calls expiring end up long the common and puts - short the common.

I agree that speculative option buying is extremely risky but the odds on a particular trade being profitable are better than 20-1.
