From the studies I've read, here it is in a nutshell:

HALF the people who have ever smoked have quit (data from the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research (part of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services).

70% of smokers claim to want to quit.

At any given point in time, about 40% of smokers will claim to have TRIED to quit sometime within the last year.

Of these, a little less than half will have been successful.

The KEY characteristics of those who have quit successfully are being READY and MOTIVATED. The same as with any other habit or addiction.
