I would like to buy athm, is it too risky to buy xcit?
Its a tough call, you have to make up your own mind.
The market has priced the risk of the deal falling through as larger than typical. Currently it is 14% while for example the LU/ASND merger discount is a little over 7%.
Personally I think that the merger is fairly certain. @home agreed to overpay for Excite already and I doubt that there is much that could happen to change that. I have 70% of my "ATHM" in XCIT.

Howard,

At this point I don't think the deal is going to fall apart, but who knows. The individual investor is always the last to get the information. Given the price action on Friday, I would guess that someone knows something good. As far as purchasing ATHM, I was scared at 102......it promptly went to 90......but I held, and now my patience is being rewarded.

It's up to the individual to determine one's risk tolerance. If you like the idea of broadband internet service, where else could you put your money? AOL? nope, they are still trying to get into the arena.

Good Luck

Try to figure out what xcit's value would be if it became single again. There are not too many companies that could pay what athm is probably going to but there are some. It strikes me that the lcos deal that has apparently fallen through may have worked better with xcit due to Bell's claims of highly refined demographics and marketing(I think the basic problem is that the lcos deal forced investors to accept reality now rather than keep up hopes of a pie in the sky future). Anyway, there might be temporary downturn if the athm deal falls through but if the internet mania continues I think a single xcit could easily do as well as athm on a 1 year time scale. Therefore I think it is worth the risk to own xcit (I bought xcit around Christmas time and I don't have any athm shares yet). Good luck!
