S. KOREA FEARS 64M DRAM CHIP PRICE FALL WILL HURT EXPORTS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story Filed: Sunday, March 21, 1999 8:20 PM EST

SEOUL, Mar 22, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- The spot price of the 64-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip continues to fall, spawning concern that South Korea will have difficulty in improving its balance of payments.

An official of the Ministry of Finance and Economy said the decrease will set back semiconductor exports and thus efforts to achieve a targeted surplus in the country's balance of payments.

The 64-megabit DRAM price stood at US$9.01 per unit Tuesday, slipping below $10 for first time since last October.

The price, which climbed to as high as $20 per unit early last year, fell to a record low of $7-8 in July last year.

A series of production cuts by major chipmakers worldwide pushed the price to $10 in October. But this year has seen a price decrease to $10.18 in late February from $10.82 late December.

The chips account for 60-70 per cent of the country's entire semiconductor exports.

US' INTEL CORP TO CUT PENTIUM III PRICES BY 20%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story Filed: Sunday, March 21, 1999 5:49 PM EST

NEW DELHI, Mar 22, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- US microprocessor giant Intel Corporation plans to slash the price of its recently-launched Pentium III processor by 20 per cent soon, a top company official said.

"Pentium III (P-III) is our most aggressively marketed chip and this would also follow the same pricing strategy as the earlier ones," director South Asia, Intel Corp, Atul Vijayakar said.

Intel's P-III was available in 1,000 unit quantities for US$696 and $496 in the 500 and 450 mhz versions respectively.

Declining to reveal further details on the pricing, Vijayakar said, P-III had received tremendous response in the first two weeks of its launch.

Intel launched p-III processor, the first micro processor designed for internet access, had earmarked $300 million for its advertising campaign after the processor's worldwide launch on February 26.

Intel would also launch P-III's 550 mhz version in the second quarter of 1999, he said.

The company's P-III Xeon processors in 500 and 550 mhz version was slated for launch within two weeks, he said.

Intel's mobile P-III processors were also slated for launch in the second half of the current year.
