Also, while we're talking major problems should NYC and other metropolitan areas not be prepared to pump and treat water, there is portable reverse-osmosis filtration devices available both from military and civilian sources.

And in a pinch, there's always iodine tablets that kill just anything alive in muddy water.

I believe in having some amount of water storage capacity, but I believe more strongly in possessing the means to filter water whereever I'm at. Besides, it give me more room to stash necessities like cigarettes and the liquor stock... <VBG>.
