>>Do you know if Brokerages are required to close out their short positions by the end of every month or is it the end of the quarter.<< Doug, It is my opinion that they would not have to. Now as this is just my opinion, I wanted to find out some more on this. In order to do this, I called the Toronto office of a brokerage firm I deal with. The person I spoke with is currently working through the course to be a professional trader on the floor. He seemed very sure of his answer when we talked. This is what he told me . . . It really depends on the different types of accounts that the brokerage firms have. For example, an institutional account will have it's own specific margin requirement. As long as they meet their margin level they can have whatever ratio of holdings that they want to in their account. Now a firm that is acting as a Professional Market Maker would be severely limited by a hard and fast rule on the amount of shares that they have to hold in either short and long positions over time. He also mentioned that a firm may have an investment/inventory account which, again would be no different than a regular trading account and be bound by the same margin requirements. I do know that if a firm was using trading programs to create buy and sell orders to hedge their positions, then the option expiry dates can create huge swings as the program sends out huge buy and sell orders based on their positions. I would also say that, if there is in fact no pre-established SEC standard pertaining to your question, then a big factor that would/could come into play would be the policies that each individual brokerage firm establishes for their own traders. So the short answer after asking an expert is . . . "It Depends". Now, I ask that if some of the other "more experienced" (and no, I don't mean old), readers can expand what I have just stated - or clean up what I may have messed up in the translation - please do so. Hope this helps! Crazy Canuk
