Ramsey was cautioning that the article only stated "belief" and may have been a trial balloon by the Chinese government. He was not saying that, if true, it is not a big deal. I am sure Ramsey thinks it is a very big deal if China opens up to cdma, but then he can speak for himself on that point.

John,

like I said, China is no telecom powerhouse. Korea, Japan are way ahead of them in Asia, not to mention the US and a couple of kind of telecom companies in frozen parts of Europe.

Opening up the Chinese telecom market to foreign ownership is one of the biggest concessions rumored to be offered by Zhu to gain entrance to WTO.

I suspect China would try to use their market size to strike as good a deal as possible, hopefully including some technology transfer (oh no, spy case again) so that they will not be so reliant upon foreign companies in the future.

In the mean time, just like the respective economies, Asia goes where Japan goes.
