Yes, The down time is a killer. There is nothing worse than watching a trade go bad, and not being able to pull the trigger, because your broker is down.

i wouldn't say short availability at etrade is anything that good. i couldn't get efax (tried 7 times), or most of the other high flyers. did get sevl and ppod, however... that's a totally separate issue as to whether you should open an account there; i withdrew nearly my entire account, and don't recommend e-trade for anything; they have this "feature" (not a bug), which i've posted {and steve goldman wrote back}, of periodically confirming a trade, then telling you (24 hours later) that it didn't happen...not fighting for you, and cancelling it out of your account. so if you short, you 'cover', and the stock keeps tanking...and your 'short' was cancelled, you're now long a crappy company. - bob
