I would advice you to 'fix' the OS first before reinstall
Office 97. Sounds like some corruption to critical OS
DLL which may be introduced during the installation of
office.

BTW, do you think it is the right time to get on board of
AMD again ?

I'd try:
- moving CDROM drivers into low mem, so your PC has access to them while running in safe mode
- after you deinstall MSOffice97, check for mem conflicts b/n drivers
- MSOffice97 may have exposed a pre-existing conflict
