Steven, once again I am reminded forcibly of how very much I like you. Logic tells me that there are millions of people in the world, probably thousands within a few miles of my doorstep, who are more deserving of my help. But if we do not do this nobody will, and nobody should die like that. The thing is, you have not met the millions of people who may be more deserving. You have met this man and you are responding to your acquaintance of him as an individual, even an individual that you dislike. I have always been bemused by those who find it easy to care about the "bleeding crowd" but don't reach a helping hand to an individual in need if the person is unattractive. Thank you for being the kind of person who feels he does have to deal with the need he sees.

My favorite part of your post-- I have yet to work out my feelings on this, other than feeling that it is all a royal pain in the ass and I wish I didn't have to deal with it. Isn't there a saying that you can't be courageous if you don't know fear? To me, your statement is what gives your actions their beauty and their power. It's what elevates them. If you were doing this because you were ordered to by your religion, your government, or because it made you feel or look good, I'd say, oh, that's nice, big deal. But to do it for NO reason that you really can verbalize other than "no one should die like that" and you just know someone has to and damn, looks like it's you-in SPITE of the fact you really don't want to, and don't have to... Well--neat. oh, that we all could react like this without some other agenda creeping in. Finally -a case of man's humanity to man!
