TRW's thermal imaging program.....TRW Healthcare Solutions

Center for Medical Image Analysis
The Vision to Make a Difference

In today's managed healthcare system, physicians are continually seeking ways to decrease costs without compromising medical care standards. This means reducing time spent on diagnostic decisions, while maintaining or increasing the accuracy of each diagnosis. It also means finding the best diagnostic tools that serve not only to increase patient flow, but also reduce the number of unnecessary, painful, risky treatments or interventions.

The use of medical imaging provides a cost-effective means to improve diagnostic effectiveness. Modern imaging technologies often produce a vast volume of measurements that can be quantitatively difficult to interpret.

Recent gains in medical imaging utilizing digital data capture and the rapidly decreasing cost of powerful computers have made it possible for image analysis to effectively address the need for rapid and accurate diagnosis. Computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) can provide quantitative information that is less visually apparent. CAD-X can direct the clinician's eyes, to areas of interest rather than attempting to make diagnostic decisions. This enables physicians to utilize emerging technologies and gain insight into physiological as well as anatomical phenomena. Image analysis serves as a tool that enables physicians to work faster without forfeiting accuracy.

In its continuing vision to develop and support healthcare information technologies, TRW founded The Center for Medical Image Analysis. The company created the center as a way to support new healthcare technologies. By applying its advanced technology capability to the medical field, TRW has developed a world-class imaging resource that offers leading edge:

Medical Image Analysis
Visualization
Clinical Diagnostic Decision Support
Systems Integration
A Full Range of Image Analysis Capabilities

The TRW Center supports physicians and the medical imaging industry in all aspects of image interpretation. This includes radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound imaging, thermal imaging and tissue spectroscopy.

Advanced image restoration, processing and analysis techniques provided by the Center are applied to help detect and highlight tissues, structures or organs important to diagnosing a condition or evaluating a treatment.

The TRW Center specializes in the development and application of algorithms targeted at CADx. This aids physicians in processing the vast amount of information captured through imaging to make intelligent diagnostic decisions. Expertise in imaging and medical physics aids in designing image collection techniques and protocols to extract the most information possible.

In addition the Center develops CADx techniques to detect complex interactions of signal intensity, spatial relationships and time dependencies that are indiscernible to the unaided human eye. Information can be combined from diverse sources to detect disease abnormalities.

Visualization

Modern graphics techniques aid in visualizing the complex 2D, 3D and time-dependent image data produced by the Center's latest imaging technologies. Modern image processing and analysis techniques are applied to help detect and highlight tissues, structures, or organs important to diagnosing a condition or evaluating a treatment. Cutting-edge techniques cover the spectrum from simple image manipulation and storage, complex 3D and 4D interactive visualization, to advanced statistical decision-making support.

Clinical Operations Support

TRW's Clinical Operations Support organization is closely allied to the Center. It was established to assist diagnostic medical device companies and specializes in the support of diagnostic medical imaging and information systems. Through the Clinical Operations Support organization, the company provides services that include:

Installation of Systems at Clinical sites
System Training
High-Quality Maintenance of Installed Systems
TRW aids in development of operational and maintenance manuals (including translation services) and acts as a purchasing agent and system integrator. The company also provides high-reliability software validation and verification services to increase medical system reliability.

World-Class Systems Integration Expertise

TRW offers a wealth of systems integration tools to market today's technology diagnostic systems. Some of these tools include advanced image analysis capabilities, algorithm development, world-class high reliability software development, knowledge of FDA processes and biostatistics capabilities, technical services for field installation, clinical training and maintenance.

TRW - A Strong Healthcare Commitment

TRW understands the importance of integrating possibilities into healthy solutions. As one of the worlds leading systems integrators for the past four decades, TRW has designed comprehensive programs that fully integrate people, processes, hardware and software.

Within the healthcare community, TRW's systems engineering and integration means secure, ready access to all aspects of patient information. The company is fully dedicated to developing new healthcare technologies with a goal of saving lives, improving the quality of life and reducing healthcare delivery costs.
