Andy,

Have you noticed the irony of AMD positioning their top end chip with on board L2 cache against Intel's PIII w/out on board cache, but then come next fall we will see AMD position the K7 w/out on board cache against Coppermine/Cascades which will have it?

K7 needs an L3 cache more than PIII, because the K7 L2 cache is slower than the PIII L2. I don't think PIII will gain as much by putting an L3 on the motherboard.
