The PIII does not have on die L2, but it will in at least some of it's future versions. Higher frequencies + fullspeed L2 with lower latency. Expect a significant performance boost.

The current Pentium III, like the K7, has an off-chip L2 cache.

The current Pentium III off-chip L2 cache is 512K bytes and runs at 1/2 the clock speed. Pentium III XEON L2 caches are also off chip but can be as large as 2 MegaBytes and they run at full CPU speed.
