It's worth noting too that in the cases of QWST/LCI and GBLX/FRO, it was the acquired party who initiated merger talks. in the intervening months of each deal however the market caps of the acquirees surged and they ended up reversing the deals and becoming the buyers.

Good point Mark...a true sign of the inflection point the telecom sector hit with the rise of QWST et al.

I'll never forget Brian Thompson's response at the QWST/LCI press conference when he was asked why he let QWST take LCI out. He was supposed to be up there talking about how great the combination would be but all he could say was "it was simply a matter of market caps". That merger has been difficult on everyone at LCI except possibly the sales force. Which by itself answers about 90% of the questions about the merger doesn't it.
