SAP AG gave its backing to the new Linux computer operating
system, which is seen as a threat to MICROSOFT CORP's Windows NT
package. SAP demonstrated its R/3 enterprise resource planning
software running on Linux at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover and
said it would begin making customer shipments of R/3 on
Linux-based systems in the third quarter of this year. SAP, the
world's largest maker of business software, said it was working in
cooperation with its business partners and customers to gain
experience in Linux so that the system would be used as a stable
and reliable operating platform. "Employees are saying they are
absolutely thrilled with the quality of the system," SAP co-CEO
Hasso Plattner told a news conference.
