Not too long ago, I posted a reference to an article in Technology Review (Jan/Feb 1999). Would like to quote a few passages from the article to see if anyone can add information about the company. The article discusses the FBI's new IAFIS system, designed by Lockheed Martin (won contract not because of knowledge of identification systems but because of their experience in computer imaging and in managing complex projects), which is to come on line in July 1999 (but not be available outside of FBI until November or later).

Interesting thing about the article is that it speculates that the FBI technology is being overtaken by a new paradigm even before the FBI system begins. The new paradigm has been designed by the Phoenix Group in Pittsburg, Kansas. In contrast to the FBI's centralized data base, the new system is decentralized. It operates on a Pentium II Windows machine with an ll.5 gigabyte hard drive and will hold 30,000 print records. The army bought two of the systems and the article goes on to say, "... the paradigm will really pop after this November, when the FBI will release Lockheed Martin's minutiae extraction software into the public domain. According to the Army representative quoted in the article, "It'll be like phone company deregulation. A lot of software companies will spring into AFIS." The FBI's system will form the hub, but the article predicts that the new paradigm will take over when all the little towns and departments learn to swap prints and searches directly on the Internet search engine model.

Anyone know of Phoenix Group?

art,

Some points......I only show up on the NRID thread when provoked. See my last visit....it was in reaction to a post by a fellow named Sheldon....who was making fun of the Commission smoking cigars. My post was directed back at Sheldon. Taking pot shots at the Commission will never be tolerated....on any thread....and is always met with immediate and swift response.

Yes...I invested in Banyan. And yes, Banyan has gone up 500%. It is one of several smaller stocks I have invested in. However, I have never recommended it here....or spamed it here. Those who tracked my posting....and got involved, are happy they did, last time I checked.

Your post was full of low blows.....directed at me.....the one person who has always posted NRID....instead of Nrid...or NRid, as those who post with disrespect do. Have I ever gotten any credit for this? The answer is no. I'm the victim here art. I post with respect....but get none in return.

The idea that anyone has left IDX is foolish......as are you to even suggest it. The Commission always has several projects underway. IDX is the longest term and best shot......always has been. It hurts my feelings to think that you would infer that we have lost faith or interest in IDX.

The Commission is very fair...and honorable. Perhaps our "two arms and a leg for an eye" policy is a bit harsh.....and needs to be reviewed.....I will smoke a cigar on it.

Best of luck......I think the NRID guys love to have us drop by....as we spice up a boring thread....but that's just my opinion. It is really up to you guys. You guys could stop bating us....and NRID could stop doing goofy things too....that would help.
